Sicily is an island of contradition, with Apulia it share top place in Italy for yield of its grape harvest and the amount of land that is dedicated to viticulture. More than any other region in Italy, Sicily has discovered its potential for creating really top-quality wines. Sicliy's wine culture dates back to the Ancient Greeks when they first established their settlements on the island. A real revolution took place in the 1990's among the white and red wines and the protagonists took advantage of a wide range of local grape varieties.
Among the red wines, the Nero d'Avola alias Calabrese has shown good potential whereas Catarratto is the most planted grape in western Sicily, producing both Marsala and dry white wines.
