Domaine de Cazaban Decanter Rating ****18
Description
Excerpts from Decanter by Rosemary George:
Clement Mengus wines are some of the most characterful of the appellation. They amply illustrate its originality and indeed, characterise the wonderful appeal of the broad and diverse Languedoc region as a whole.
Merlot and Syrah, ripe plum and spice on the nose and palate. Tannic backbone and long finish. Drink: 2012-2014
Grapes: 60% Merlot and 40% Syrah
A garnet red with violet hints, the wine has a strong personality. Fresh and vibrant, the Merlot gives its plummy roundness with the Syrah giving more plums and orange peel and blackcurrants. A very promising spicy finish with good length. Long ageing potential!
Domaine de Cazaban
Situated on the foothills of the Black Mountain, on two types of soil, the chalk of Montolieu and the clay of Ventenac. The soil produces grapes of extraordinary quality. The domaine spreads over 15 hectares, of which currently 3.64 hectares are planted in vines. The domaine is run by Clement and Claire Mengus, a young and innovative producer, respecting the terroir and their vines. They follow the official organic production methods, which means the vineyards are not treated with any chemicals, pesticides, insecticides or fertiliser.
